  1. Problems
    A World Health Organization (WHO) report from 1984 suggested that up to 30% of new and renovated buildings worldwide may generate excessive complaints related to indoor air quality.

    In a US report, of office workers questioned at random, 24% reported air quality problems in their work place, and 20% believed this harmed their ability to do their job effectively.

    In a survey of 100 U.S. office buildings, 23 percent of office workers experienced frequent symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) such as respiratory ailments, allergies and asthma. The impact has been usually hidden in sick days, lower productivity and medical cost, but the economic impact is enormous, with an estimated decrease in productivity around 2 percent nationwide, resulting in an annual cost to the United States of approximately $60 billion.

    Effects
    The World Health Organization in 1982 formally recognized the condition and summarized the symptom as:
    - eye, nose and throat irritation;
    - sensitization of mucus membranes and skin;
    - erythema (skin rash);
    - headaches;
    - high frequency of airway infection and cough;
    - hoarseness, wheezing;
    - itching, and unspecified hypersensitivity; and
    - nausea and dizziness.

    Causes of Sick Building Syndrome
    The following have been cited causes of or contributing factors to sick building syndrome:

    a) Chemical Pollutants from indoor sources
    Various chemical pollutants that can affect the health of a building's occupants are:
    - Carbon Monoxide (CO)
    - Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
    - Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
    - Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
    - Chemicals Used Within A Building
    - Heavy metals

    b) Biological Pollutants from indoor sources
    As well as the chemical pollutants described above, various biological contaminants often contribute to cases of sick building syndrome.
    - Toxic Black Mold
    - Viruses & Bacteria
    - Dust Mites
    - Pollen
    - Insect Body Parts

    c) Inadequate ventilation
